Because our sport relies so heavily on mother nature - there is no specific date for when the trail system will open and close. However, you can usually count on trails to all be open and accessible from New Years to Easter, and sometimes opening as soon as mid-December and staying open until mid-May.

Yes! Snowmobile rentals, including helmets, suits and other gear can be rented from On The Trail Rentals. As the name so cleverly states, they are located right at the trail head, so no need to trailer your snowmobile. You can ride straight from their parking lot to access the entire trail system including Rocky Mountain National Park and the downtown streets of Grand Lake.
You can also rent snowmobiles and gear from Grand Adventures. They operate out of Fraser, Winter Park and Grand Lake so you can ride a new area of the county each day!

Yes! During peak season you can ride straight from the trail system to downtown Grand Lake for shopping, restaurants and local events. There are very few towns in Colorado that offer this unique experience and lifestyle, but Grand Lake is by far the most snowmobile friendly town in the State.

Yes! Snowmobiling on the lakes (Grand Lake, Shadow Mountain Lake and Lake Granby) is both allowed and encouraged! The lakes can be accessed through the town and the Grand Lake trail system. Be mindful - the ice must be thick and safe enough to ride your snowmobiles on them. So please be sure to check with your rental company OR contact us or reach out to the Chamber of Commerce.

Grand Lake offers over 80 miles of regularly groomed trails. In total there is over 63,000 acres of terrain that can be accessed.

Luckily, there is usually cell service through much of the areas you would ride. However, rental snowmobiles also include GPS on the dash as well as tracking that goes back to the rental office so they can locate you or their snowmobile in the event you or their machine is left behind.
We also have maps and signage throughout the trail system to help you navigate the area and get you back safely in time for your after dark ice skating on the lake.
If you rented your snowmobile, it’s best to call them first. As a last resort, you can always contact search and rescue at (720) 507-6905.

If you plan to rent a snowmobile, the driver must be 18 years or older with a valid drivers license. However, anyone 10 years of age or older may operate a privately owned snowmobile on public lands in the state of Colorado.

Trailer parking is available at the trailhead in the Idleglen Parking Area.

Yes! Kids too young to operate a snowmobile can ride double with an adult. The trails are smooth and a trail snowmobile from On The Trail Rentals is the perfect choice for a family adventure!
